On December 22nd, and I were doing a little birding on the Belvedere road in Nobleboro/Damariscotta, Maine, when we spotted something very noteworthy: a Pink-Footed Goose.
This bird is a rare vagrant from Europe, which winters in the northwest region of that continent, and breeds in Greenland, Iceland, and the Svalbard archipelago in Norway. I sent a bird alert to my local Audubon chapter, and learned that our sighting represents only the 8th on record for the state of Maine. Pretty cool! I am going to submit a report to the Maine Bird Records Committee.
I don't think I have many deviants from Maine (other than Kaz) who watch me, but if you know any birders who live in this area and might like to check this species off their lifelist, please pass it on! It's a rare opportunity.
