Description

1. Adult male in breeding plumage. Both sexes retain the blue speculum on the wing year round, but the male replaces his ultramarine or indigo head feathers to dark gray in basic plumage.

2. Underside of hand, showing the raspy exposed skin that aids in gripping when needed.

5. Opening and closing the electrical discharge vent, which is used in self defense and as an aid in catching prey. It may cause surfaces to catch fire, which is thought to have led to the common misconception that they breathe fire.
