Description
For many years, dromaeosaurs (or "raptor" dinosaurs) were the thing I would draw all the time. Now it seems to be mergansers. Lately I've been studying their form in the photos I've taken of them, picking interesting poses to illustrate. I plan on doing a series of new paintings, possibly all common mergansers, for an art exhibit at Rising Tide Community Market in Damariscotta, Maine. I haven't been approved yet, but this is the plan. Create these paintings to show the beauty and form of this bird. It doesn't seem to be a species that gets illustrated too frequently, so it seems like it could be nice little niche.
You wouldn't think the slope of a bird's forehead would be so difficult to get right, but this one has been a challenge, with the way the drake is puffing his subtle head crest. I'm still going to make some adjustments before the painting phase. All of these will be based off of photos I have taken in the area I live in.
